I was sent over this article published by uCertify. I recently did a review of one of their courses, which you can check out here. This article talks about the job trends in the cybersecurity world. Regardless of where you are, this is something to pay attention to.
68% of the organizations said that there is a global shortage of skilled professionals and 74% said that there is a lack of talent. This is the reason that 47% of the organizations plan to hire cybersecurity professionals in the upcoming years.
(uCertify, “Know About Cybersecurity Job Trends“, 2019)
In other words, we have a shortage of cybersecurity talent. As the world goes all in on making everything dependent on technology there simply aren’t enough people to keep up with the demand. Below are the numbers for 2015 through 2018.
2018-2019: 53 percent of organizations report a problematic shortage of cybersecurity skills
2017-2018: 51 percent of organizations report a problematic shortage of cybersecurity skills
2016-2017: 45 percent of organizations report a problematic shortage of cybersecurity skills
2015-2016: 42 percent of organizations report a problematic shortage of cybersecurity skills
( Jon Oltsik, “The cybersecurity skills shortage is getting worse“, 2019)
That’s a worrying number. To emphasize, over half the surveyed companies do not have the skills or personnel needed.
What can we do about it?
Now that we identified the shortage, let’s talk about some solutions.
- Increase outreach and education: I’ve met multiple people who didn’t know about cybersecurity and loved the field once in it.
- Encourage learning: Programs like uCertify or Cybrary are designed to get you started and familiar with cybersecurity.
- Have a planned out hiring program: Companies should have a coordinated hiring program to get the talent and place them in the right role.
- Continuous learning: Paired with #3, continuous learning should be pushed to keep education going as cybersecurity is a dynamic field.
To sum up, there is a shortage of cybersecurity skills. There is an expected surge in job positions, but the supply is not there yet. Some of the ways to gather more skills is to increase education, learning, and job opportunities.
